We get dressed, grab some food, get our supplies and head to the beach. I shine the lights on some crabs in the sand and we chase them with our nets. Julius is a little freaked out thinking they will bite him. I assure him they usually don’t and in the same breath, one pinches his toe and he yells “ouch!” I can’t stop laughing. Eros came over from their room next door. “We’re heading to the beach. Are you coming too?” Melinda stayed back to look after the pets while we headed to the beach. The twins were happy running around and splashing in the crystal clear water of the bay. With vast stretches of pine forests directly along the seashore, the Schinias Beach was one of the most illustrious areas to bathe. “Dad, can we snorkel?” cried out Zayden, seeing a speedboat pass by. “You are too young to snorkel. The rules here don’t allow children below 6 years.” The twins looked so disappointed that I felt bad for them.

Guilt settled in my stomach and I didn’t know what to do about it. “Hope you wanted to hit the beach, got a suit,” he asked, as he sat down next to me. The beach always sounds good. Was I going to watch him surf? Cause that sounds pretty damn cool. I gave him a smile and nodded. “Talk to them both,” I said, turning to Phoebe, and gave her a wink. She nodded and gave me a wave.

Carrie looked gleeful. “You’re crazy,” Zeda shook her head, and they both laughed. The beach was already filled with people when they arrived—a beautiful expanse of glittering white sand where couples walked, children played, and surfers rode the moderate waves. “Wow, it’s even better than I expected,” Carrie said, looking around excitedly. “Totally filled up,” Zeda mumbled. “What are you going to be doing here alone?” Carrie asked her as she pulled off her T-shirt and handed it to Zeda, who neatly folded it and held it. “I’m joining Rylan to swim.”

“Now, don’t you worry none. Salt Creek is where the experts go to get barreled, sure, but it’s also a great place to swim and sunbathe. The sand is powder soft and the views are stunning. Come sail again. You’ll see.” When they were done with their meal, they took after-lunch refreshments on the ship’s deck—more limeade for Evelyn and Eastside beer for Andrew and Blink. It gave them time to watch more of the surfing efforts and activity on the shore. The dazzling sand sparkled in the sun’s fierce golden light, and reassuringly, the seagulls took wing again, soaring above the shoreline against the wind’s gusty ambushes. Working the wind, they reached Seal Beach mid-afternoon.
