Paige's POV My eyelids fluttered open and I took a deep breath. I just had another horrible nightmare and this time, I was being pulled apart by a vampire. My night had been filled with a series of horrid and terrible nightmares but each time I woke up, the injection I was given takes me back to slumberland and dropped me in the midst of another nightmare. It was a fucking cycle that I prayed would stop but I was too sleepy to even fight sleep and stay awake. At some point, I felt a presence around me and I was able to sleep without any nightmares until the last one I had just now before I woke up.

CHAPTER FIFTY-SEVEN MALAKAI Trigger warning: This chapter contains depictions of violence, readers discretion is advised. * * It is difficult to escape the darkness, but it only takes a second to be drawn back into it, and you are buried deeper than you can imagine. I hiss at Pierce in betrayal; how many times will I realize that there is nothing scarier than the person who put me in this situation? Pierce knows of my nightmares. Still, he drags me into it, blocking every escape route as he stands behind me, his heavy hands clenching on my shoulders like red hot steel.

It was unusual for Haze to leave their room unlocked, especially considering the importance they placed on personal space. There, in the dimly lit room, I saw Haze on her bed, her body trembling and tears streaming down her face. It was evident that she was having a terrible nightmare. She was crying out in her dreams, her voice filled with desperation, 'Don't die, Ricky. Please don't leave me alone.' For a brief moment, I wondered who Ricky was, a flicker of jealousy arising within me, but I quickly pushed it aside. I called out, 'Haze, wake up, Haze,' as I shook her body, trying to wake her from the grips of her terrifying dream.

Behind you, the cavern implodes, the Priestess’s shrieks swallowed by the void. “What did you do?” Ryland rasps. “Bought time,” you snap. The dagger still glows in your hand, its heat searing your skin. *Too late to regret it now.* The tunnel slopes upward, the air thickening with the scent of rot. Selene freezes. “Mommy… it’s *here*.” The Veil. It pulses ahead, a gaping wound in reality—a swirling vortex of shadows and static. Faces press against its surface, mouths stretched in silent screams. Wolves. Humans. *Things* that defy shape.

No, a puzzle, but somehow a clue, that goes like this. "Don’t you remember those happy voices in your mind as you sleep? Or maybe the screams you hear of terror in a nightmare. What is a nightmare? Isn’t a nightmare a small prison you’re trapped in, with no hopes of waking? Why? Because you never know you’re asleep. You forget everything, your name, your life, and who you are. The only thing to accompany you are the monsters that laugh in your mind, that taunt you, knowing everything. Your life, your happiness, everything that had been stolen away. But the scariest part of the nightmare won’t be the monsters. They aren’t scary themselves. The most fearful thing of all is that they are yours.

Violet looked up at her with teary eyes. "I saw a very bad dream," she croaked out, beside herself with dread. Her fingers clenched the cover, as if trying to anchor herself. "You wanna share?" Sienna encouraged, feeling bad for her. They both had been experiencing the same pain. "I want to see him… please, take me to him," she pleaded, her voice trembling as her heart raced. The memory ofher nightmare, Zen killing him, still burned fresh in her mind, leaving a cold knot of dread in her chest.

She said, "How long do you plan to keep holding me? If you must, can't we move over to the bed instead?" "That works too." So, Pierce followed Millie back to the bed. However, he immediately embraced her again. Shuddering, he said, "I had a terrible nightmare, Mills. I dreamed that you left without looking back. You… You left me for real. "I searched everywhere for you, but I couldn't find you. It was like you had disappeared from the world. Mills, I couldn't find you…" Pierce spoke rapidly in a trembling voice—he was clearly still shaken.

Nightmares crawl up through the cracks, dozens of them, hundreds, dragging themselves into the light like puppets yanked forward by invisible strings. They don’t rush. They inch forward little by little. Their limbs jerk unnaturally. Heads loll at impossible angles. Mouths open and close soundlessly, as if screaming behind glass. Threads of shadow stretch upward from their backs, vanishing into the air above us. She is controlling them with an invisible hand. All of this is part of her design.
