No one spoke. We didn’t have to. They felt it too. The guardians emerged like fog, their shapes forming out of the dark. Dozens of them, maybe more, all identical. Tall, draped in long chain-bound robes, skin like wax, faces pale and featureless except for the eyes—white and glowing, filled with a light that didn’t belong to the living. Their mouths were sealed shut with silver wire, stitched closed in a way that made my stomach turn. They did not move.

Then, he stared at Ethan, hoping to see excitement or gratitude, but all he saw was an expressionless face. “You seem awfully calm knowing that you can leave.” Stephen could not understand why Ethan could stay so composed at a moment like that.
