He tilted his head slightly like recognizing my voice from a distance and then the white threads reappeared but they did not connect to the soldiers. They stretched upward into the sky. Into the unseen. Something answered from above and the clouds began to spiral. The air vibrated with gathering force and Kade’s feet lifted slowly off the ground. “Kade!” I screamed. He looked at me one last time and the sky split open.

He had traded his aquatic scales for a suit of pressurized weave, his movements fluid and efficient. ​The Pathfinder banked hard, fighting against a massive updraft of warm air that smelled of ozone and ancient machinery.
