He had given the wrong prescription and almost killed him. It was one of Declan's secrets, and he wondered how the doctor had found out. "Don't talk nonsense!" Bryce roared, his eyes bulging. "Me, talking nonsense?" The doctor glanced coldly at Declan and Bryce and said, "I was the boy that your grandfather almost killed! He's a damn lousy doctor!" The place fell silent. If Declan could misdiagnose a cold, had he also misdiagnosed the old man who had fainted?

Knox's POV The doctor's office was small. A desk, two chairs across from it, a filing cabinet, a window that looked out onto the side of the building next door. He sat behind the desk and put the clipboard down and folded his hands on top of it and looked at me with the patient, waiting expression of someone whose job required them to receive difficult information calmly. I sat down. I had built the story on the walk from the lobby to this room. Not a complicated one — complicated stories had more places to go wrong. Simple was better. My hands didn’t shake. But inside, I was falling apart. “Ma’am,” I said to the patient, making a huge effort to keep my voice steady, “I’m so sorry, but my son is in the ER. I can’t continue this session. I’m going to call a colleague right now so you’re not left alone, but I have to go.” The patient looked startled. “Is he okay? Your son…?” “I’ll do everything I can to make sure he is.” I said it as a doctor.

I really should be there when the doctor gets here, so I asked Elliot and dad to watch what happens and I walked to the exam room. When I went to take off his shorts, he winced in pain. I asked, “What hurts, hon?” He replied, “My ankle hurts.” I told him, “We’ll make sure the doctor looks at that, for sure.” W

I walked the doctor up immediately I was told of their presence. "You should excuse us," the doctor said. It felt strange, but as I was about to step foot out the door, something pricked me to look back. "What!" I exclaimed and walked to the doctor who shivered. Maybe, my exclamation attracted Johnny, and the ladies who ran up. "Who sent you?" I asked, and he shook his head. After receiving a series of slaps from me, the doctor let out the truth. He is a real doctor but wants to save his daughter's life.

Still, it made me glad I'd worn the cute dress today, even if the once-over was all in my imagination. It didn't take long before the rest of the table started talking to the doctor. I'm sure it was a common occurrence. Being one of the two doctors in town meant that he was bombarded with health questions constantly. I admired his patience, though, as he spoke with everyone there. His demeanor was so relaxed and happy, which was pretty much the opposite of how I had been feeling before he'd shown up. I watched him dreamily as he spoke and only stopped when my mom nudged her elbow into my side.

My teacher said that they were called doctor quak because they are untrained people who pretend to be a doctor to cure the people who are sick using herbs or not medically advisable. He used to say that, “All doctors are doctors, but not all doctors are professional doctors, so you should always be careful and consult to a licensed doctor.”
