Joseph felt the wind knocked out of him as he heard the whistle followed by the loudest sound he's ever heard in all his 16 years under the Tau Ceti sun. A whiz and BOOM. Whiz and BOOM. Explosion after explosion came pummeling down onto them. An unending barrage of terrifying heat and sound and fireball crashed all around them. Joseph covered his face as clods of disturbed earth pelted and rained down on him. His screams were drowned out by the loud thunders. It went on forever. Until it didn't. Then it stopped. He heard nothing afterwards except the constant ringing in his ear.

Her laughter echoed like musical chimes amid the sun's roaring energy. The children, little embodiments of solar energy themselves, danced around Jolene, their joyful cries mixing with the deep hum of the sun's surface. Jolene was vibrant and full of life, a beacon of warmth that drew everyone in. Apollo felt his heart swell with love as he watched her embrace their children, twirling and spinning with them, her movements as fluid as the flowing solar winds.

I say, and they nod. The sun shines very bright in the sky and I smile, remembering Zoe's words. Find me in the flowers, the rain, the wind, the sunlight.

In this house, she lived like a high-end housekeeper. As for me, I barely left my room except to eat. I cleaned out the storage room until it was spotless. Even though it was still packed with old furniture, the sunlight there was perfect. I often dragged a chair to the window and sat there for hours, basking in the sun, like an old man waiting for the end. Sometimes Jonathan would pass by my door. When he saw me sitting in the sunlight, he would pause for a moment, but he never said anything.

“I already told you. You belong to me.” A nervous, disbelieving laugh bubbled up from my throat again. “How on earth do I ‘belong’ to you? That night… that was a mistake! A huge mistake! I was highly intoxicated. But now, with my head clear, I definitely don’t want to get involved with a man like you.” He chuckled, “You’re already involved with me, Sunshine. Any woman I have my tongue down there, on her pussy, belongs to me.” The words were raw and explicit, something I had never heard someone speak of so casually, it made my skin prickle. My face flushed and I instantly looked away. How could he speak like that? How could he be so… crude?

I didn’t bother with an umbrella; it was a bit hot, but I felt lighter than I had in years. Even the darkest places eventually see the light.

The corner of her mouth curves up in a small sleepy smile, involuntary, unconscious, just her and I understand in that moment, with complete and inconvenient clarity, why I call her sunshine. She doesn't even have to be awake to light up a room. I straighten up. Stand there another beat longer than necessary. She has absolutely ruined me. She just doesn't know it yet.

Taking a deep breath, I spoke the words aloud: "Every sunny day is a reminder. Every sunny day is a curse. I remember the way I tried to keep her cold body warm the way the sun couldn't. I remember every detail of how she looked. Her laugh haunted my dreams. The memory of his smile turned my heart to stone. And as every day went on, I remembered how she left me alone."
