Bryan’s remark annoyed me to no end. I was wrong about him. He hit on Mom, and it was not recent, either. Mom pushed me to the ground, the broken shard on the floor piercing into my back. An excruciating pain washed over me. Without looking at me, Mom cupped Bryan’s face between her hands. “Does it hurt, Bryan? Let me blow the pain away.” They made me sick to my stomach. Despite her years on earth, Mom lost all reason and turned against me, her daughter, for a man.

"How did I end up with such a shameless daughter? You're the third wheel, and you're accusing her of being the other woman! Get out of my face! I don't have a daughter as pathetic as you!" It felt as though my heart was being ripped from my chest, severing the last ties between my mother and me. Whether it was defiance or rage, I ripped open my shirt to reveal the mottled scars beneath—burns from cigarettes, bruises from beatings, and cuts from being slashed… "Mom, look at me! Clarisse lifted her chin, stuck out her dirty shoe, and planted her hands on her hips as she glared at Maeve. "Not only do you have to kneel and apologize—you have to kneel down and lick my shoes clean! My mom said raising you is like raising a puppy. Puppies lick their owner's shoes. That's only natural!" Before my eyes, my daughter—who had always been proud and obsessed with cleanliness—actually bent her knees and assumed the posture of kneeling down to lick the shoe. "Maeve, don't!"
