"Always... protecting," Selena gasped, blood frothing on her lips. "Even... when it... hurts..."
The shadow poison spread faster this time, her body already weakened from the first dose. Black veins crept across her skin like living tattoos. Her breathing went shallow, rattling.
"She's dying," Derek said, his medical training kicking in. "Minutes, maybe less."
"There has to be something—"
"There is," Cassia said quietly. She'd been silent until now, watching from the edges. "Phoenix fire can delay shadow poison. But not regular fire. Life-fire. The kind that burns years instead of wood."
