Her eyes fell on a book with a black cover, the gold letters reading: “The Art of Breaking Chains.” She pulled it free, curiosity winning, and curled into his leather chair. The chair was far too big for her, swallowing her small frame, but she felt oddly safe in it. Before she realized, her eyelids grew heavy. The book slipped onto her lap as she drifted into sleep. Hunter returned late, his mood thunderous after the ring, after Geret. His mind was sharp, his body burning with violence he hadn’t been able to unleash fully. But the instant he stepped into the quiet house, he sought her.

She thought she was all high and mighty because she was a Bittermane. He spat, wiping the name from his mouth. Her mother tarnished that name for good by being a whore and running off with that hunter. He shook his head. A flash of brown moving through the crowd caught his attention. It was the new hunter in town, Garin. He was pushing through the people, making a beeline for Willow's cart. "Garin!" Lyall called, Garin was only a few feet from him. His head pivoted and he saw recognition pass through the hunter's eyes. Garin paused for a minute before walking towards Lyall, cautiously.

The old woman, despite her blindness, managed to seize the pouch, and with a strange delight, she sniffed at it while continuing her haunting laughter.

He then screamed back at me, “Freya, why are you not helping me? We need to get them out!” I sipped my beer and watched as the hunter in cell three was charging towards Finnley. I could have warned him, but he needed to realize, we couldn't just let these deranged hybrids out. He screwed his face up at me, clearly not happy with my lack of concern. He turned back around to face cell three, and as he did, the hunter had half shifted and then ran headfirst into the cell wall. Finnley startled, and then as he jumped backwards, he slipped and fell onto the floor.

I was a hunter, a machine, and I had a job to do. I pulled up on the opposite side of the road to The Heath, wondering idly if it was still called that now it had been repurposed. I kept my head full of easy thoughts, so there was no space for the intrusive, probing comments about my own rapidly deteriorating state of mind. I killed the engine, and then I settled in to wait.

I watched as the silver burned his palm, but he didn’t make a sound, he just threw the knife from my hand across the room. The look in his eyes turned from anger to crazed. I knew he was bound to slip up in this frenzied state. Luckily for me, I was a Hunter. No, I wasn’t just a Hunter, I was the best Hunter in The Academy. I knew I needed clarity, I needed to remain calm, and the only way I could do that was to get a read on his thoughts. He grabbed my throat and I instinctively tried to pry his hands away, but in reality I was reading him like a fucking book.
