The pendant went ice-cold, fighting it, but the power pushed harder. My vision sharpened again. I saw every bead of sweat on Jakob's forehead, every scar on Sveinn's neck. My nails split and lengthened into black claws. Not full shift. Something else. Older. I stepped past Gunnar, grabbed the bars with my new claws, and looked my father dead in the eye.

His hand suddenly grabbed my wrist, spun me around then he pressed his lips into mine. I froze. His tongue delved into my mouth, his arm wrapped around me like a constrictor so I couldn’t move away. He tasted rich— so fucking rich. Like money and expensive whiskey and something else. My instincts kicked in. I dug my teeth into his lips hard. I thought he would let go. He didn’t.
