The prey had been let loose with the first shot. The prey had naturally split into three distinct groups once the first shot had been fired. The front group had taken off at a sprint, desperate to reach the trees as quickly as possible. They were hoping for a hiding place, anywhere they could wait out this year’s game. They were the panicked participants. They were desperate to go home alone another year, their optimism pushing them onward as their legs pumped as fast as possible to quickly cross the plain and reach the tree line. Many would disappear into the trees before the last of the prey had even crossed the starting line.

She spat. The space wobbled, and she found herself standing in the midst of an unfamiliar forest, watching two wolves square off with twelve men surrounding them. As Elyssa wondered what this alpha duel had to do with her, the black wolf pinned his opponent to the ground and sank his teeth into his throat. In a fit of rage, he ripped off half his throat, howling as he shifted.

“Players who have chosen the same prey are not allowed to attack each other. That only calls for disqualification.” “Once the timer stops counting, then the game ends! You do not attempt to keep hunting again after that. If you fail to capture your prey, then that is your loss. But it’s okay, you can always come back the next year if you aren’t such a sore loser.” Everyone burst into laughter at his words. Disgusting. All of them. “Oh, I almost forgot, the preys are allowed one weapon each too. I mean, what thrill is it if they don’t fight back, eh?”

He was sure even a whisper would alert the shadow he was looking at in the dark. What it was, he didn’t know. He was sure, though, that it was bent over to a lump, unmoving body of someone. The creature was groaning, but its prey was no longer in the defense. Adjusting to the darkness, it became a challenge not to make a noise when he took in the feature of the monster. It looked just like the ones from the movie he, and others before her, were so fond of binge-watching. “What is happening?” he whispered, tears racing down once again as he slowly moved back.
