It really looked more like a journal now that Bella was looking at it closely. He undid a bronze latch that was keeping the leather cover in place. There was no title that she could see, and the first few pages appeared blank save for a rather long handwritten dedication.

She didn’t know if she could protect herself. But she would die standing before she let these people see her break. The lead hunter’s gaze devoured her. Tiara buzzed violently, static cracking through her system. “Ma—ma—mama—run—” Jenna’s stomach dropped. “No. We stay together.” The hunter stepped into the firelight, revealing more details—bone piercings threaded through his ear cartilage, teeth strung as necklaces, symbols cut into his ribs. Then he raised the spear.

"It’s a trick! They want you weak so they can finish us!" The hunters didn't wait for my answer. They were machines of bone and steel, their eyes glowing with a cold, violet light. The man in the black mask pointed a heavy silver cannon at us. "Kill the mother! Capture the seed!" he roared. A blast of violet energy tore through the air. I dived to the left, pulling Leo against my chest. The beam hit a glass bookshelf, sending a rain of sharp crystal shards across the floor. Rowan lunged at the nearest hunter, his claws tearing through its metal neck, but three more took its place. They were fast, moving with a mechanical precision that made my heart race.

She nods and ducks back in only to come out seconds later. "What is it?" She asks as she swipes a piece of hair behind her ear. "This is from Hunter." I reveal the book and look down at it. "His grandmother was a tigress, like you. This is everything she learned and he wants you to have it." I hold the large, leather bound book in between us. She takes it into her hands and flips open to a random page.
