There was only the weight of my hands and the heat of the fire. The first true test of our return was the Primal Hunt. We didn't use scouts or sensors to track the elk herds through the valley. Killian shifted into his massive, slate grey form, his silver eyes flashing with a predatory joy that I hadn't seen since the first year of our union. A man on foot had broken free of his hiding spot and was gunning it after us, running at an impossible speed. I didn't need to see the light sucking black surrounding his pupils, annihilating the whites of his eyes to know what he was. I could tell by the way his arms jerked as he bounded towards us, closing the gap between hunter and prey. I slipped my gun from the holster strapped to my thigh and let off three rounds the same instant the front tire ran a hole, jarring my shots and sending them wide. "Keep it steady!"

Then it happened. A glow ignited beneath Hunter’s skin, spreading like veins of molten gold. His already imposing frame seemed to expand, his golden-brown fur darkening, his eyes flaring with silver fire. He then screamed back at me, “Freya, why are you not helping me? We need to get them out!” I sipped my beer and watched as the hunter in cell three was charging towards Finnley. I could have warned him, but he needed to realize, we couldn't just let these deranged hybrids out. He screwed his face up at me, clearly not happy with my lack of concern. He turned back around to face cell three, and as he did, the hunter had half shifted and then ran headfirst into the cell wall. Finnley startled, and then as he jumped backwards, he slipped and fell onto the floor.
