“All yours, Alpha.” I leaned in, watching as Xavier scrolled through the folders. Names like Project Winter, Project Obsidian, and Project Twilight filled the screen. Then, his eyes stopped on a folder. He froze. “Do you know this one?” I asked, pointing at the folder titled Project Blackwater. Xavier took a deep breath before answering, “Claire worked on this project during the five years she was gone.” Hearing Claire’s name made my stomach twist. I furrowed my brows and asked, “You didn’t tell me what happened to her.”

He opened the door for me, and I slid in, pretending my stomach wasn’t twisting itself into knots. The drive started quietly. The city lights blurred past my window, each one flashing like a tiny reminder that I shouldn’t care who Richard came with. But of course, I did. Xàvier finally broke the silence. “So,” he said, glancing at me. “Did Jace tell you about the new project?” I looked at him, surprised. “So you know about it too?” He nodded. “Yeah. I've been tailing him." “Is it true? That it’s bigger than the Sinclair project?”

I wish it did because then, I wouldn’t have to deal with Any staring. “Project 236 will be concluded as soon as we get some clarification from the research department on the prices and the specifics about distribution,” Mr. Uriah, one of the main Project and Proposal team members says. “Good. King Nolan will not like so many delayed projects,” Andy says. I narrow my eyes on him, not liking how he thinks he can speak for Nolan. Andy merely smirks at me again, already staring at me from across the room. I can’t stop my hands from curling into fists.

I was trying to see if any of the other project names stuck out to me. There was one color that didn't seem to have very many binders, which made me curious. So, I grabbed one of the two black binders and pulled it down as well, sitting in the chair Victoria had provided. I opened it and saw 'Control Project' written on the front page. There was a red stamp on the paper as well that read 'CLOSED'. "What is this?" I asked, and Victoria rolled over to me in a chair of her own.
