He had to become a weapon. Late one evening, Isabella was led in a vision to the vault beneath the sanctuary—the same vault where the forbidden texts were kept. The air was thick with incense and memory. She opened the book that had once burned her fingers and found it warm, pulsing like a living thing. Words in an ancient tongue revealed a prophecy: "When the vessel bleeds beneath the old fire, and the sword of the chosen burns, the false prophet shall rise, and with her, the silence of Heaven shall shatter."

She simply answered. "How da..." She leaned over, interrupting me. "YOU. ARE. A. PROTÉGÉ." She pronounced every single word slowly as if she needed to remind me about that fact. I gulped loudly, taking another step back, trying to scoot as far as I could from her. "Not a vampire's potential bride or lover. A protégé! A woman chosen by a lord, a clan lord, and then well-kept and educated for years before she is turned. But you won't be like any of those newly turned vampires, who'll need to survive centuries before they could raise their rank. No, you'll be turned into a noble vampire lady with clan members bowing down to you."

I'm reviewing a math practice test the night before the college entrance exam when I spot a chunk of red text that shouldn't be there. "At 10:00 pm, your sister's classmate, Britney Lowe, will come to your house asking to stay the night. She'll say she had a fight with her parents and has nowhere else to go." "At 2:00 am, she'll sneak into your room, then call the police at dawn and accuse you of assaulting her." "The police will arrest you, and you'll be sentenced to three years in prison. Your younger sister, Lizzie Brown, will become the target of school gossip, and unable to face the online bullying, she'll jump to her death." I frown as I read it, assuming it's some kind of prank.

PROLOGUE The battlefield was ruined—scorched earth, broken stone, and skies ripped apart by magic that should never have existed. Mountains had crumbled into blackened dust. Rivers boiled and twisted away from their beds, fleeing the wrath that had been unleashed. The air reeked of ozone and blood, thick with the scent of burnt gods and shattered spells. Corpses lay strewn like forgotten relics—mortals, celestials, beasts of realms unnamed—all silenced by the cataclysm that had torn through reality.

And I’m standing in the space between life and death being offered one more impossible choice. Face unknown trials that might kill me permanently or accept death as eternal duty. “I’ll take the trials,” I say, because of course I will. I didn’t survive everything else just to give up now. The presence manifests more fully and I recognize it with shock. It’s the Progenitor. Not the one I know but something older, the true First Wolf that existed before reality itself. “Then let the Wolf Trials begin,” it says. “Starting now.“

Step through it, and you are bound to what comes next.” Elen stepped forward. “And if we don’t?” The Prophet’s eyes didn’t flicker. “Then Maen writes its chapter without you.” Mira gave a dry chuckle. “Sounds like prophecy.” “No,” the Prophet said. “Accountability.” Velan was already walking. “I’m going. I have to.”

He was still standing there, like a silhouette in the distance, slowly fading into the fog. Some people were only meant to accompany you for a part of your journey, and our path together had long since come to an end. Now, being at peace and well was the best ending for us both. I turned forward, closed the car window, and looked ahead, my heart calm. The fog gradually lifted, sunlight spilling gently, and I knew this was the start of a new beginning.

"The hunt is where your partnered with one other person, but" he said looking up into my eye's again "but if one dies no charges are pressed, its fair game" he stated quietly causing me to let out a gasp and my eye's to widen.
