“ I do. When I don't know.” And I wasn't sure if that was a good thing or not. the shift had a way of changing some people, Alphas especially. Would she get worse in terms of her personality? Her decision-making? I bit my lip, looking back. Major personality shifts happened after the first shift. Grace didn’t seem to think Eason was any different, so maybe she wouldn’t change much, either. But would it be so traumatic that she might never shift again? I wasn't even sure if Eason was learning to shift alongside controlling his magic. George probably had it on the docket if he wasn’t stable enough to do it yet, but I made a note to check. I lifted the radio back to my mouth.

It was listening. And there, in the midst of the ruined circle, and with the ash of the broken symbols whirling about his feet, stood Fenric with his hands not trembling with fatigue, but with the shock of what he had just wrought. The Shift was not in pieces, but there was something altered in its framework. He could sense it as a crack down in a mirror, subliminal but keen, a disjunction that would increase over time.

I had to, so he would win. I remember how they all sat there staring at me… utterly dumbfounded and confused.. even scared. They told me later that they’d never in any of their lives seen anything like it .. they’d never seen anyone shift so quickly, or without the medicine. They said usually the first shift is slow.. and each part of your body shifts one at a time. This happens for the first few times in fact. But for whatever reason… I did it all at once. Maybe that was the first sign that I was somehow different. I hadn’t thought about that in ages. But I’d always been a quick shifter. Even after that day the second and third times I shifted .. it was immediate.

Tamara’s eyes widen in great astonishment while looking at Shahara who stood up and looked at the shelves while talking to her. She already know how to shift at the age of five?! It was incredible! – She remarkably thought. “Shifting can be triggered by various things like anger, too much pain, uneasiness, even too much joy, or loneliness. Heightened emotions can be a probable cause of shifting into our wolf form. We can shift at any time – and it can be uncontrollable – the thing is we must master how to shift back to our human form.” Tamara was attentively listening to whatever Shahara was explaining to her.

Trying to breathe in, and get used to the feeling of having my face so close to the ground. Of heightened senses that nearly makes my head swim. It takes some time, but once I'm fully adjusted, the second reason I don't like shifting settles in-the disgust, the shame. An impostor. That must be what I am. What kind of rogue can shift? What kind of rogue will shift and run in the wind, when his people are robbed of this joy. My snout tickles when I feel a harsh laugh breaking out of me. It's almost too old now.

“Shifting?” I looked between the brothers, my tears drying up. “What’s that?” “When we reach a certain age,” Kross answered, his hand still on my face, “we go through something called a shift. The shift is the brutal awakening of our true nature, when our human body breaks, twists, and reshapes to make way for the beast inside.” “Axel was a late bloomer,” Kade continued, his voice filled with sadness. “He shifted at the age of twelve, when the age we were meant to shift was eight.”

Shaking his head as though disappointed, unable to hide his snigger, he supplied, “What do you think Psyche Plane is. Okay you go, Ms. Amira.” Standing straight, scanning the room with her eyes, as though wanting everyone to know she got it right and how impressive she was, she said in a clear voice, “Psyche plane, as a matter of discussion, exploits the idea of a being possessing a part of itself that could use the mind to unravel an ability—unconsciously or not—to suit the user’s intelligence and self-awareness.”

With a stiff neck, I turn away. I focus on the dumbass ABC's strip that lines the top of the wall. I know we have some special students, but does Mr. Williams really think it's necessary? Then again, here I am talking about psychopaths. Of course he thinks we're stupid enough not to know the alphabet without having to sing the song. "It's a mental illness that not only affects the host, but also the people around them. They become victims to the rotten thoughts that plague the psycho’s mind, driving them to do insane things," I force myself to continue.

Stu wondered aloud, which kind of mirrored Patricia's thoughts. "Played the newbie card, asking if any of the guards or staff knew what we were and how they kept it a secret. Especially on full moons when the pull to change is strongest." Anyone who morphed where humans could see was inviting instant discipline, usually of the fatal kind, from the shifter council. It also resulted in the humans getting subjected to a mind-altering drug to make them forget what they'd seen. The drugs weren't something anyone liked to use given the side effects were rather unpleasant for the humans involved. Not to mention there was always the fear the drug wouldn't work and they'd have to kill an innocent.
