Without even hearing his response I already touched the end call. I’m doomed. Do I need to wait or not? I didn’t even hear him. Poppycock! There’s some sort of disconnect between the thoughts in my head and the formation of words and sounds with my mouth. The guy must notice me gaping like a fish because he pats my head again and gives me what I think is supposed to be a reassuring look. “The aphasia will wear off as well.” He smiles a little. “Drugs that can take down a shifter quickly often have undesirable side effects, but the one I designed is one of the safest.” What. I found myself staring at my own hand, my heart pounding relentlessly in my chest. I looked up at Asher and saw a small smile gracing his lips. Simultaneously, my whole body convulsed, my bones shifting and changing without ceremony. My teeth sharpened, and my vision became unnaturally acute. I could see colors I’d never seen before; the world was a kaleidoscope of hues. I looked at Asher, my eyes wide with fear and wonder. “I’m shifting,” I whispered, my voice filled with awe. “I’m really shifting.”

"Still think I'm crazy?" I couldn't breathe. Couldn't think. The world I knew shattered like glass, and I was falling through the pieces into something dark and dangerous and utterly terrifying. "No." The word came out broken. "No, this isn't real. This can't be" "It's real." He shifted back to human in seconds, but I'd seen it. Couldn't unsee it. "And you need to accept it fast, because when you shift, you'll need control. Without it, without training, you could hurt someone. Yourself. Your mother."

Completely silent. My wolf whimpers once inside my mind. Then he goes still. My body jerks violently and the shift hits me like a truck. Bones crack. Muscles twist. My claws disappear while my massive wolf frame folds in on itself and shrinks down into human form. The pain of the shift barely registers. Because my head suddenly clears. For the first time in years my mind is quiet. No whispering voices. No burning anger pushing me to attack. No fog twisting my thoughts.

She blinked a few times as her eyes began to water. “No, no, none of that, Shela. I’ve made you cry enough. Now tell me the juicy details!” I said, laying on her now instead of sitting on her. I could imagine this would be a very seductive scene, me laying on Shela and just conversing with her. Again, this wasn’t me at all. She was confused and overwhelmed by this complete character change in me. Hell, I was confused and overwhelmed by my own actions. Like, what the hell am I doing right now!
