Crazed creatures with only one drive: bloodlust. My gaze was drawn to the fifth combatant. The massive black wolf. Shifters were classified by beast—wolf, bear, cat, horse, etc.—but their power was ranked. And this one… its aura was a sickening kaleidoscope of forms, a chaotic storm of potential. It was an Alpha Shifter, one of the rare few with multiple forms. Rarer still were the ones who could process DNA and become anything they’d ingested. This one’s aura screamed of that terrifying, limitless potential. A monster of a different caliber. An apex predator among apex predators.

A thin book wedged between two larger ones. "Shifting Disorders in Common Bloodlines." My heart started racing. I pulled it out with shaking hands. The cover was worn and faded, but the pages inside were clear enough. "Chapter Three: Incomplete Transformations." I could barely breathe as I read.
