He ignored my question as he was more busy staring at the blank wall. He looked at all the walls. Suddenly I remembered the questions asked in the past. "What do you think about these walls, Jessica?" "Well, I don't know. I don't think about them in particular" "Why? Is your brain not smart enough to tackle these questions?" "How are you ever going to achieve something when you can't even describe some stupid wall?" "What will you do if I let us out within half an hour?" "That's not possible!" "I am not asking you what is possible and what is not! I am asking you what will you do if I let us out within half an hour?"

Then he says: "Is this what you want?" Not *what do you think* or *what are the implications.* Not the practical question first. *Is this what you want.* I look at the arch. At the city beyond it. At the man standing at the threshold stone holding a coffee that has gone cold because he has been here long enough not to notice the temperature.

Mind racing. "I mean," Wonder continued innocently, "you're teaching us to question our certainties. To doubt our beliefs. To hold everything lightly. But aren't you certain about that teaching? Aren't you convinced that doubt is necessary? Aren't you sure that holding things lightly is wise? So should we doubt that, too? Should we question whether questioning is good? Should we hold lightly the teaching about holding things lightly?" The silence deepened. Every face turned toward the beginning. Beginning opened their mouth. Closed it. Opened it again.

I hoped that it was the case because I seriously can't handle these two questions playing inside my head: Is my sanity still up for discussion? Or are these dreams telling me something?

How many chances does a person deserve? The question sat alone on the page. Simple. Dangerous. Impossible. Jessica stared at it for a long time. Then closed the notebook again. Outside, Paris glittered beneath the night sky. Inside the gallery, the question remained unanswered. Yet something important had changed. For months Jessica had been asking whether people could be saved. Tonight was the first night she found herself wondering whether everyone should be. And once that question enters a person's mind, it becomes very difficult to make it leave.
