he announced, voice brimming with satisfaction, “concludes the Game for today! Players, please step forward for final count.”
Final count.
A guard waved us into a single uneven line. I stumbled into place, my head so numb I barely registered my surroundings.
There were far fewer of us now.
The Game Master paced slowly in front of the line, hands clasped behind his back like a professor examining students’ homework.
“Much better,” he said brightly. “The strong rise, the weak fall, yada yada—natural order, survival of the fittest, insert motivational poster quote here.”
He flashed a grin that could have slit a throat.
