The large glass windows showed the beautiful, bright blue sky above the city skyscrapers. Leo was sitting on the thick gray rug in the corner, a bright yellow crayon clutched tightly in his small hand. He was carefully coloring the wheel of a big dump truck. Marcus was sitting cross-legged right next to him, holding a blue crayon, helping him fill in the lines. "You're doing a great job, Leo," Marcus said softly, pointing to a small spot on the page. Renna I had spent a week in my so-called home, surrounded by familiar yet unfamiliar faces. Xavier, my companion, had rarely shown up at his workplace, instead opting to take me to my former workplace. Marcus watched quietly, this was the first time he had seen Leo get attached to someone, he couldn't just believe this was happening. For the first time that day, Leo seemed calm. Lyra took out a box of crayons and placed two papers on the table. She picked a crayon and drew two simple figures;one was her, the other was a small boy standing side by side. Leo watched, then reached for a crayon. Slowly, he added a small love shape between them. Lyra smiled. When it was time to leave, Marcus stood. “We’ll be going now,” he said softly.

Leo arrived soon after, bouncing into the room with his usual energy, carrying a small stack of drawings. “Mama! Papa! Look at what I made!” he exclaimed. I knelt to examine the pictures, boats, castles, suns, and small stick figures holding hands. My chest warmed at the sight. “They’re beautiful, Leo. You’ve done a wonderful job.”

Chloe drew the cup small and dark and the figure still. Léo came home at four without the crutch. Chloe looked at his hand and the crutch was not there. He was holding it loosely at his side, not using it, just carrying it the way you carry something you might need but haven't needed yet.
