Chapter Six: LAYING LOW “I’m sorry… there are things I’m keeping from you.” Rojean said to Lucas when they got out of the car before sighing to herself. They were now walking to Lucas’ car so they could go home although Rojean seemed a little cautious of her surroundings if the others were really gone and were other people following her? Lucas could only look at her too before thinking of a question. “Who died? Why are you involved in this? Isn’t it a bit illegal? It feels illegal to me, babe.”

As I blink a few times, I only feel his hand at the back of my body before pulling me closer towards him; letting my body fall onto his, once I've lost all control before meeting the darkness. Forget me, Rose. It'll ease the pain.

Rose lay there, her body twisted, her throat torn open, her once-bright eyes staring lifelessly at the ceiling. “No,” I whispered, my voice hoarse, but the denial rang hollow even to my own ears. The maid fled, her cries echoing through the castle as I sank to my knees beside Rose’s body. I reached for her, but the shadows surged, wrapping around my hands, forbidding me from touching her. I couldn’t remember what had happened. The shadows had taken over, erasing everything. I didn’t know if it was me or the curse, but the guilt was the same.

It shifted from shadow to flesh to shadow again. The cloaked figure stood behind the shadow that was trying to crawl toward its target. With its free hand, the figure pushed back the hood of its cloak. Marx saw the face of the woman; solid, then shadow, then solid again. She lifted the shadow to face her, the thing hissing threats. She opened her mouth to show the same wispy columns of white teeth, her face turning partly insubstantial. From the shadow’s mouth, a silvery light appeared. It passed from the shadow to the woman. She released it and it broke apart into nothing.

She squeaked out. No reply arrived to her that confused her more. Rose tried to prevent her curiosity from getting the best of her and continue with her walk only to feel another shadow moving behind her. Sighing, she called again, "Is this a trick? Is there anyone there?" When there was no more reply, Rose decided to follow the shadow, preparing herself in case of anything coming toward her. As she followed the faint shadow's movement, Rose realized she was led to the glassy door of the garden again. It was Dominic's garden.

Elder Sharon looked at her for a long, agonising period, then a vicious, twisted smile bloomed on his wrinkled face. “So be it,” said Sharon, his voice ringing in the tomb. The Trial of Blood and Shadow is at midnight. Let’s see if the Northern Fire can blaze through the gloom or if the King’s new Luna will be nothing more than bones in the dust.”

My eyes widened when he brought out the CD’s. “You have shadow combat?” I squealed in delight when my eyes caught sight of something familiar, and I grabbed one of the CDs from his hands. “Shadow Combat 7: The Red Awakening! Oh! My goodness, my brothers are going to be so jealous when I tell them I played it.” I giggled, my eyes darting towards him again. “That is the latest one in the Shadow combat series. In this season, the main character is going to journey into hell to find the magic flower that can bring his lover back to life, but first he must defeat Satan.”

I was pinned down but, I would fight with everything in me. I reached out to Rudolph through my mind and gave a mental image of everything. I knew now why I felt so connected to him. It had nothing to do with me, yet it felt like it had everything to do with me. I was his eternal soulmate. We were Shadows of the night passing each other, torn apart by death but, meant for each other by fate. Eternal soulmates, yet shadows in the dark. I reached for Rudolph with everything in me. I could almost see him in the field of flowers. He reached for me. I felt myself fading. Edgar must have figured out our connection in my mind cause he screamed.
