The only thing that mattered was bringing Rayne back. I materialized at the edge of the chasm, peering down into its seemingly bottomless depths. The darkness was absolute, a void that swallowed all light and hope. I extended a Wolf claw, preparing to slice my palm, when an unsettling chill crept over me, signaling the arrival of The Shadows. They emerged from every direction, and none, their dark tendrils writhing like living serpents.

" I choked out, clutching the manuscript against my chest as I backed away until my spine hit the cold stone wall. ​Gabriel smiled—a slow, terrifying curve of his lips as he stepped into the dim beam of light. ​"I told you before, little bird," Gabriel whispered, reaching out to take the corner of the parchment from my trembling hands. "There is nowhere in this town where my shadow can not reach."

AURORA'S POV The shadows twisted around me, thick and suffocating, as I fell to my knees. My hands pressed into the cold black ground, trembling with exhaustion and rage. “Ancestors,” I breathed, my voice cracking. “Help me. Please!” A sudden pulse of power surged through the Shadow Realm. The earth beneath me split with a deafening crack. From the fissures, skeletal hands clawed their way upward, followed by pale figures cloaked in black mist. One by one, they emerged—a legion of vampires, their eyes glowing crimson like dying embers.

Her grief gave birth to the wrath that tainted her as the change took hold. It wasn’t long before she caught up with Daniel and the others. Her mind went to Ava. The woman told her of a plan. One that would see Penny being whole again. Ava needed to live. She needed to retrieve the Book of Shadows. Everything rested on her and the book. What the rest of them had to do was stay alive and keep each other safe. The shadows used themselves as projectiles, rocketing towards Penny. Since they could not render her soulless, they came at her to cause physical injury. Penny allowed her anger to feed her strength.

I look around but I don't see anything. “They are getting closer, will you follow?” he starts to get demanding a little as I sit looking around for the giggling. “Who's getting closer?” I ask the man. Just as I finish asking the man wraps his arms around me from behind the tree, clamping his hands together, holding me right on the rough bark of the tree. “Let me go!” I yell hoping he would listen. The sound of giggling gets louder as his grass gets tighter. I see a light from a flame appear from behind me lighting up everything in front of me. I can see 3 shadows appear on the wall of the building. They still giggle as they get closer to me. I struggle to break free of the man's grasp but I'

The sound of her crying had lodged itself somewhere deep beneath my ribs in a way I didn’t know how to remove. I wasn’t built to comfort people. I was built to destroy threats. Control outcomes and learn how to survive. Yet somehow, with her, my instincts kept shifting into something dangerous. Something softer. My eyes drifted to the sketchbook in her lap. The Shadow Collection had evolved again. The pieces were darker now. Sharper. Structured like armor while still moving with impossible elegance. Black silk layered with metallic threading. Emerald accents hidden beneath folds of fabric like concealed blades. Pain translated into art.

She grabbed my hand with both of hers, grinning like she’d just been given the world. If only I’d said no again. We hadn’t gone very far when we were cornered. I was too young and foolish to recognize the danger signs around me… The way the wind stilled. The sudden silence of the woods. Even the birds had stopped singing. I should’ve known. I should’ve known. But I was too caught up in keeping her happy, in trying to prove I wasn’t boring, in proving I could be fun too. And then the Shadows came fast, and merciless. They moved between the trees like ghosts, surrounding us before I could even react.
