His eyes take one look at my face and harden.
“What is it?” he asks, controlled, but I hear the storm behind his restraint. I lift my phone with shaking fingers and show him the messages. He reads them once. Twice. His face goes blank in the way that scares me most, like all emotion has been rerouted into focus.
When he speaks, his voice is quiet enough to be lethal. “He wants you alone.”
“Yes,” I whisper.
