“That is a copy of one of the stories that they found. They were ordinary papers. Letters. With ink and dust like they were found in an old store. “Are these what I think they are?” I asked. Luke nodded, signaling that I opened and read them all. I skimmed through the first down to the fourth one in my hands. “The fuck??!”

I read three words of it and put it in the bin. I sat with the Henderson file and opened it to the page I was looking for. I read it. Read it again. It didn’t land.

I muttered under my breath. Like vultures attracted to a corpse, they had come when the fight was already over, eager to get as much information as they could. I opened yet another email and quickly read through, my lips moving as I followed the words on the screen. I stiffened as a paragraph caught my attention. I read it again.

"Relax. This isn't a quiz; it's a reading check. If you took your notes or at least paid attention, and you finished the reading from Friday, it should be a joke." I waited for them to get their materials ready, sheets hastily torn in half and shared with neighbors. Tabitha had stored a half sheet for herself from the last reading check, the tear a perfect line across the top of the page. Taylor had forgotten a notebook. And a pen. And to do the reading, as was plain from the look on her face. "Question one: which of the major themes we discussed - remember, you can use your notes on this - was the dominant theme of these two chapters?"

Daisy walked back to the main house. Everyone was busy with dividing rice into trays, working at full capacity. They are the elderly people but so healthy. They like to work to be moved around and don't like to sit in one place feeling cramped and tired. Daisy really admires them.
