Daisy's voice came out almost painfully. "Well what?" Daisy looked horrified. "Jessica Jane." Jessica laughed. A nervous, breathless laugh. "I don't know what's happening." "What does it say?" Jessica looked down again. The page trembled slightly in her hands. Then she read aloud. "Dear Miss Jane..." Her voice immediately cracked. Daisy folded her arms. "Skip the boring bit." Jessica laughed again. Through tears this time. "I'm trying." "Try faster." Jessica took a breath. Then continued reading.

She hugged Amber and headed downstairs. “Never, ever let her quit,” I whispered to Amber. “I won’t,” she replied. Jenny was in the living room, reading a book in some language I didn’t recognize. “What are you doing, Babe?” I asked. “Reading,” she grinned, knowing I wouldn’t let it go. “Well, until someone interrupts me.” “In a foreign language?” I teased, though it was obvious. “For you, yes. For me, no,” she played along. “Is it a good book?” I joined in.

Jenna clenched her fists and gritted her teeth as she spoke with a look of determination in her eyes. Hearing this, Bethany blew her a flying kiss. Jenna simply looked at her with a solemn gaze. Just as silence ensued between them, Erica walked into the room carrying a glass of milk and snacks. “Jenna, here are your snacks. Have a bite,” Erica said as she walked into the room. Jenna looked in her direction without saying a word. She stared back at the phone. Then, she kept the phone on the bed and went to the closet to get her laptop computer.

I was too frightened to not do it. "Hmm so you agree with that. Nice..." Ethan erected his back. Susy asked, suddenly animated, jumping up from the couch before taking the booklet from Jenny. “I came across it today at the antiquarian bookstore near the shop,” Jenny said enthusiastically. “Will you lend it to me once you’ve read it?” Susy asked. “You can take it today,” Jenny smiled. “I’m reading something else right now, so go ahead and take it. Just return it when you’re done.” “Thank you so much!” Susy said excitedly, and the girls hugged. Susy sat back down on the couch, Jenny grabbed a few crackers, and then she looked at the guys.

Mysteries. Instead, the first page contains a lengthy complaint about blisters. I blink. Then read it again. A reluctant smile tugs at the corner of my mouth. The next page isn't much different. Apparently, Jenna hated carrying supplies. The one after that contains an entire paragraph insulting the weather. The one after that complains about sleeping on rocks. By the fourth entry, I find myself snorting quietly. The sound feels strange in the silence. Almost foreign. Still, I keep reading. The further I go, the more real Jenna becomes.
