"Could you read to me?" Well, that's the plot twist.

“Bread delivery. Routine. Safe. Predictable. That’s how it gets you.” Her fingers traced the edge of the diary. “And then boom, desire slips in through something as small as eye contact and a hand brush. No contracts. No dramatic rescues. No blindfolds.” She tilted her head slightly. “Just tension. Slow, building, inevitable tension.” A pause. “And honestly? That makes it more believable than most.” Chloe’s expression softened just a little. “Because this is how a lot of real stories start. Not with fireworks… but with repetition. Seeing the same person over and over until curiosity turns into anticipation… and anticipation turns into hunger.”

He had developed a method for reading them: first for the story, then for the numbers, then for the assumptions that underlay both. He read it once straight through on Saturday morning, with the specific reading quality he used for documents that needed to be understood before they could be assessed — no annotation on the first pass, just the full picture. He made coffee. He sat at the desk in the townhouse study and read all forty pages.

POV: Hailey I read it three times. The first time my eyes moved over the words without fully taking them in, just the shape of them, the handwriting, the specific way she formed her letters, small and controlled and leaning very slightly to the right. The second time I slowed down and let each sentence land properly. The third time I read it like I was looking for something I had missed, some hidden layer underneath the words themselves, some explanation for how a person could write something like this and still have done everything she did.

She simply looked at it for a moment and let him know, by looking at it rather than at him, that she was taking it seriously. "May I read it?" she said.
