Ignoring her comforting words, I march past her towards my closet. In haste, I rummage through my clothes until my hand clasps around 'it'—the red book I'd stolen from Artemis's room during my first awakening. "Here," I say, tossing the book her way. Her wolf-like reflexes snap into action, catching the book effortlessly. She studies its intricate design, her fingers tracing the worn leather before she opens it and flips through its ancient pages. "What's this?"

“It’s fine, I know I wasn’t the easiest growing up.” The headmistress nodded and left. I looked at the book she threw before me. I felt Rhys pressing forward again. I rolled my eyes at her, “look who finally shows up.” She growled in return, “you wouldn’t believe me if I told you.” I picked up the book and made my way to my bedroom. I sat down on my bed. I tried to open the lock on the book, but couldn’t. I sighed, “great.” I felt my body changing when Rhys took control. Claws formed from my fingertips. With her claws she opened the book. Like the lock was made for her. The claws retreated when Rhys gave me back control.

I pulled it to me as the rest of the case records started to load and my program continued to search. I opened the book, flipping the pages, straining to read it. I flipped it around and pushed my power until I could just barely feel something behind my eyes and rumbling in my chest like my wolf waking up and growling down at the page. I growled as my head began to hurt from staring at the page for so long. There had to be some way to read this damn thing!

Trying to remember how to get back to my room proved to be a trying task and it took me a few minutes to find the right path in the maze of hallways that was Cain's home. After I finally found my bedroom, I unpacked my suitcase, sent Zak a text to tell him I had arrived and was safe, and then took a shower. In a fresh set of pajamas, I sat down in front of the fire I had started in the fireplace and took my grandfather's books out of my bag. After Jai had made a comment about them that morning on the train, I had stowed them away in the bottom of my bag. Opening the book on Lycanthropy, I tried to read it but I couldn't concentrate.

The next morning, Morwen didn't come to drills. But at noon, I saw her in the library alone, hunched over a crumbling tome, fingers trembling as she traced forbidden runes. She looked up immediately when I entered. Her eyes were red-rimmed and desperate. “You,” she says, voice raw. “It’s you, isn’t it? The Hearthstone. The wards.” I tilt my head, feigning confusion. “Headmistress, I don’t know what you’re talking about.” “Don’t lie to me!” she snapped, slamming the book shut. “You’ve changed. Ever since the Hollow failed to break you, you’ve been… up to something and you've been acting strange.”
