Her voice struggled to be audible now and a lump slipped down her throat. "Who are you?" I asked. Silence pierced right through us as my eyes fell to her lips and hers stared right in my face. "I don't understand…” She pulled away from me but in that moment I knew she knew exactly what I meant. I’d said I could read through people and Hazel was the easiest for me to read. When you spend so much time looking at someone, you’d pick up on a few habits like the way their eyes flutter when they're holding something back. You’d notice their filler words or the lump that was always quick to slip down their throat.

What actually happened was more interesting and more generative than that. Clara moved through the material the way she moved through the property — not systematically, not linearly, but with the instinct of someone following what was alive in the thing rather than following a predetermined path. She would be working on a specific section and then suddenly say: here, read me this part out loud. And Anya would read it and the reading-aloud would reveal what the silent reading hadn’t. The place where the voice tightened. The place where the prose was doing something slightly different from what it thought it was doing.

POV: Lyra She read Riven's letter twice. She read it the first time with the analytical attention she brought to all correspondence, parsing the structure and the implication and the specific word choices, and then she read it again with the different kind of attention she was learning to bring to things he wrote, the attention that listened for what was underneath the structure, and she found, both times, that it said exactly what it said and nothing more and nothing less and that the simplicity of it was the point.

He read it. It was short, just under four hundred words, and he read it twice, the second reading more slowly, and she sat across from him and watched him read without watching him read, the particular discipline of someone who has given someone else something of theirs and is now waiting to find out what it is in the other person's hands. When he looked up his face had the particular quality she had learned to read as the expression he wore when something had been accurate in a way that required a moment to receive.

The beautiful brown eyes kept moving from right to left, tracing every sentence in a fantasy book that she was reading. As if not satisfied with the reading speed she was trying, her brown beautiful eyes moved even faster, as if her brain was getting more interested in the book she was digesting. Word by word, sentence by sentence, she continued to trace the direction of the story being told in the novel titled "Werewolf Kingdom".
