When Clayton heard Nicole’s voice, he pursed his lips, put his hands down, and turned to look at her as if nothing was wrong. “Yeah, I’m fine.” However, his smile was a little wan. Nicole laughed. She could not help but laugh when she realized that Clayton was afraid of horror films. “Look, the girl should be pulling the door instead. The door won’t open because she’s pushing it…” Clayton turned his head to look, just in time to see a female ghost with long hair suddenly appear on the screen. He jumped in fear. There was some surprise in those dark eyes, and his finger bones were well defined as he grabbed onto the armrest. He looked like he was in shock.

Clair shrieked exactly once, then denied it immediately. “That was not fear,” she said, clutching my arm. “No?” “That was outrage.” “Sure.” She hit my shoulder. “Shut up.” The path split and narrowed in odd places, forcing groups to separate and rejoin around fake coffins, crooked mirrors, and rooms pulsing with red light. The attraction wasn’t good, exactly, but it had that chaotic carnival quality where bad design and too much noise occasionally lined up into something effective. At one bend, we nearly walked straight into a hanging body prop, and Clair actually ducked into my side with a startled laugh.
