"What are you doing to her?" Red suddenly turned to the people behind her. "Get me the marker!" She instructed. "Be fast about it!" Two people bowed instantly and hurried into one of the buildings that they had installed in the trees. Then they emerged with a small object in each hand and passed it to Red the moment they reached her. She began to whisper words in a foreign language which I could not comprehend, before starting to draw lines on my skin. I shivered at the coldness of the substance, it was truly a marker but I wondered if it was ordinary or there was more to it.

Something in my chest that has been in one position for eleven days shifts. "Vienna reported in this morning." He crosses to my desk. Sets down a single printed page with the deliberate care of someone who has thought carefully about how to deliver something. "Prague went dark yesterday. Lisbon haven't responded to three separate messages." He pauses. His voice doesn't change — he's too good for that — but something behind his eyes does. "The degradation pattern is consistent across all five bloodlines. Starts eleven days ago. Simultaneously." Another pause. "To the hour."

He simply smiled with a look of relief. The apple rolled to the ground, picking up dirt. From the start, Zach had been provoking Jessica on purpose.
