It’s obvious that they spent the most time here, and in their rush, they dropped something.
I spot it in the dust near a half-empty sack of oats. A single, small, hand-carved wooden bead. It’s smooth, worn, and drilled with a hole to be strung on a leather cord. It looks like a pup’s toy.
I pick it up, rubbing it between my thumb and forefinger. It still smells faintly of milk and panic.
“What is that?” Marcus demands, stepping up behind me.
“This,” I say, holding it up to the light, “Belongs to our ‘Redmaw spy.’” I toss the bead to him and he catches it, his brow furrowed as he examines it.
