I closed my eyes, breathing deep, reciting Psalm 23 until my heartbeat slowed enough for me to grip the wheel steady again.
When I finally opened them, I caught sight of myself in the rearview mirror. My hair clung damp to my forehead, my lipstick faintly smudged, my eyes wild.
I straightened my blouse, dabbed at the sweat with a tissue, and forced my mouth into composure.
“Money, Gloria. That’s all you’re here for,” I told my reflection. “Pick it up, and go back home. Back to Michael. Back to my husband.”
