She’s falling, her body tumbling toward the jagged rocks below, and I can’t do anything to stop it. But then, out of nowhere, Permiton reacts. He’s below her, his movements swift and precise, and in an instant, he reaches out and grabs her wrist, stopping her fall. The force of the catch jerks them both downward, but Permiton braces himself against the cliff, his other hand gripping a secure hold. “Find your footing!” he shouts, his voice calm but commanding. “Now!” Maerilee scrambles, her legs kicking against the rock until she finds a small ledge to rest on. Permiton steadies her, his hand still wrapped around her wrist, his face a mask of focus.

Our group has eleven people in total. I think about what Aamon said about my sweaty hands and the trick he taught me to fix the issue. Right, right. Of course. I reach down and rub my hands on the dirt, then I grab the rope and pull myself up. One. Never think about the height. Two. Never look down. Three. One leg after the other.

We did the bags for an hour, then went to the weight room. There we showed them to the equipment we used for Mondays. Pull downs, pull ups, presses, the whole works. We told them to start with weights light enough to do at least three sets of ten with only a half minutes rest between each set. With both of them, it was fairly light.

When they finish their lap, they’re not even winded. Meanwhile, I’ve broken into a sweat just watching them. “Try not to drool, Harper,” Theo teases as he walks past. I scowl at him, and he laughs. My gaze shifts to Chase as he stretches his arms over his head, his shirt riding up just enough to give me a glimpse of those abs I already know feel good under my fingertips. Dillon draws my attention then as he drops to the ground to do push-ups like he’s showing off. Archie catches me looking and winks, clearly amused by my not-so-subtle gawking.

Bold move. Ten picked a dramatic ballad. He didn’t dance much, but his expressive eyes and slow, emotional gestures had everyone hypnotized. He even mimed tears at the climax. Aron chose a funky retro pop track. He mimed playing instruments, spun like a musical theater star, and even threw in a finger gun or two. Night surprised everyone. He barely moved, just slowly mouthed the lyrics of a sensual R&B track while holding eye contact with the camera. Subtle. Dangerous. The room was stunned.

I would survive this. "Hey, Lyra!" Lou yelled from the kitchen. "Turn the TV up, will you? The news is doing a segment on that new high-rise project downtown. The one that’s supposed to bring in the 'big spenders'." I walked over to the small television hung in the corner. I reached up and turned the dial, the static clearing to reveal a man standing in front of a wall of cameras. He was wearing a suit that probably cost more than my apartment building.

I am independent and strong, and feel nothing for Jacob anymore. Turning, I wipe my hands and cheeks off with a towel that is imprinted with two peaches. The fabric rough against my skin. After I'm done using it I wonder what to do with it. Do I put it back? Not sure, I throw it on the counter and walk out. Max is doing pushups, his biceps bulging with every dip, his back flexing with every lift. My heart flutters, and an audible gasp tumbles from my lips.

Girls, please come on up here!” Mel and Lia both pull away, looking at each other. “We won?” Mel asks, surprised. “We won!” Lia confirms, excited. Danielle wipes the tears from her face, fanning it with her hands to hopefully clear up the red patchiness of her skin, although the knows that it won't help. Everyone will know that she was crying. Unless, she can stay behind the girls and keep her head down.

But every few minutes I catch myself glancing over at him, watching him move through exercises with the same determination he shows on the ice. "Your turn," Bryson says after finishing his pull-ups. He's breathing harder now, a light sheen of sweat on his forehead. I move to the pull-up bar, jumping up to grab it. The first few reps feel good, my muscles warming up, finding their rhythm. But then I notice Bryson watching me, and suddenly I'm self-conscious about every movement. "You're rushing it," he says quietly. "Slow down a bit." "I know how to do pull-ups."

I pull away from Piper, looking over all of the equipment. “Uh, is this level of equipment an Alpha thing, because I didn’t have this available to me back home,” Landon says. We all look at each other, shaking our heads. This is the crème de la crème of a training facility. As I watch, Yorick jumps up, grabbing a pull up bar and begins doing pull ups. I feel my mouth go dry and my panties dampen as he lifts his legs at a ninety-degree angle and then easily continues doing pull ups. I can’t tear my eyes away as I watch the muscles in his back and arms ripple with his movements.
