Reid appeared at my locker between second and third like he had materialized from the wall. He fell into step beside me without introduction or explanation, carrying his bag over one shoulder, looking for all the world like we simply walked to class together every day. "Jaxon told me," he said quietly. "The boy in my first period." "Mm." He scanned the corridor ahead with the easy, unhurried attention of someone who had been trained to do it so well it looked like nothing. "He's not enrolled here. We checked the office system this morning after the parking lot."

Cassie chuckled, her gaze lingering on Sarah. Sarah turned back to the counter, pretending to wipe something that wasn’t there. Cassie leaned in, her voice dropping, conspiratorial. “So? Did you do the deed yet?” Sarah nearly dropped the rag. Her face went from flushed to blazing. “What? No! Absolutely not!” The thought alone made her heart race. “Really?” Cassie looked genuinely shocked, her brows arched high. “You’re telling me you’ve got Jax Reaper Reed kissing your soul outta your mouth and you haven’t gotten naked yet?”

I looked back, and with a heavy heart, I said, after I closed my eyes, "I, Chastity Reid, reject you, Alpha Xander Finch of the Red Moon Pack. I also denounce you as my alpha and proclaim myself a lone wolf.” It was very painful. I grabbed my chest because of the unbearable pain and knelt. Then I remembered that I had to leave. I didn’t want them to find me and punish me. With that thought, I got up and started to run deep into the woods, still holding my aching heart. Am I free?

The sound of his boots faded down the hall. I pressed my back against the wall and slid to the floor. My body was still shaking. Not from fear. Or not only from fear. When his teeth had grazed my mark, something inside me had ignited. A heat that started at my neck and poured down through my chest, my stomach, my thighs. My skin had tightened. Reid looked up at her with concern and something else I couldn't decipher was written all over his face, “are you okay?” He touched her hand slightly and I swear but I could literally see electricity crack out from where their skin touched and Miimii tensed at the same time Reid pulled back abruptly as if he was scalded by a hot iron. “Yes, I'm fine, thank you, Beta,” she curtseyed and retreated. Reid stilled for a while, his eyes fixed on the spot where Miimii just left, his expression unreadable, and then he looked up to catch me staring at him and a smile touched his eyes and lips. a smile that was supposed to be charming and disarming but only managed to chill my blood to ice.

My mind instantly trailed back to the book I had previously read in the pack library. ‘There are 4 Reavers that rule the Underworld.’ Raphael was one of the names in the book. I was snapped from my thoughts when I looked up and found myself face to face with an eerily gorgeous man.

“They will answer for what they did regardless of where they run to.” “I can’t wait to get my hands on them.” Darius said, his teeth showing in something that wasn’t quite a smile. Kaidora moved to the mat on the floor and lowered herself onto it. She reached beneath it and pulled out a book so old its spine had cracked through entirely, the pages held together by nothing except habit. She opened it carefully and spread it across her lap. Darius and Aurelian crouched on either side of her immediately. The pages were covered in the same script that lined the walls.

“It's not gonna work, Xavier. You're literally poking my ass right now.” “I can't help it, baby.” He sniffed my hair, hands cupping my clothed breast. “You smell so good.” “Can you not do that while I'm around?” Reed walked past us inside the jet, holding a pair of headphones and looking thoroughly unimpressed. I pushed Xavier off me and straightened my dress, my cheeks burning. “Thanks, Reed.” “Don't thank me, ma'am.” he muttered. “I'm just trying to preserve what's left of my sanity.”

“You’ve weakened him. You’ve cost him allies, control. Do you think that kind of love is sustainable when the real wolves start circling? Victor was nothing compared to what’s coming.” Elena didn’t look away. “Then let them come. I’ll stand beside him.” The door behind them opened, and Reid stepped in, tension riding his shoulders. He froze when he saw Ada. “Christ,” he muttered. “Was this a family reunion and no one told me?” Ada gave him a thin, dismissive nod. “Mr. Shaw.” “Ms. Blackwood.” Reid eyed her carefully. “You come bearing condolences or threats?” Ada smiled faintly. “Sometimes, they’re the same thing.”

He needed to focus on his healing, and we respected his need to have some space, and let him contact us when he felt comfortable with it, instead of pushing a relationship on him, the same way we did with Dominic. The doorbell rings and Reid tenses even more, his jaw clenching and his arms tightening around us. “It will be fine,” I say, tilting my head up to kiss him.
