I hated it. I hated the emptiness of this world without him and the betrayal of finding Jasmine with that college student in her apartment. I hated all of it. But I never lost control. Like now. But guilt was louder than desire. I pressed my forehead to his chest instead of closing the distance. “Reid…” My voice cracked. “This is exactly the problem.” His grip loosened just slightly. Not gone, just… listening. “I’m supposed to end things with Liam tonight,” I whispered. “He’s planning something big, and I’m here doing shots and dragging you into my apartment like I’m the main character in a disaster movie.” Reid let out a quiet breath above my head, his chin resting lightly in my hair. “You are a disaster,” he murmured, not unkindly. “But you’re my favorite one.”

I scan the corridor because I can't say what I want to with so many people close by. His jaw clicks so loudly it echoes down the hall. Reid grabs my arm, and the moment his skin touches mine, sparks dance between us, making my already addled brain melt to mush. He doesn’t say a word as he practically drags me down the hallway. The silence stretches for what feels like miles, the energy between us thick, electric, and suffocating. I can feel his rage burning through him, searing like an open flame. “Why don’t you get on the bed and find out? Since you’re so curious about gay sex, I can fuck you. I am grateful for the respite, as no one seems to be paying attention to me. I pull my cell phone out of my bag and open the Kindle app. It's still a while before class starts, so I want to read a chapter first. I duck my head and look at my phone as I devour the words on the screen. I started a book last night , and by all the saints, I think this book is going to tear me apart by the end. The main character goes through so much and then the supposed hero makes her suffer too. I must have cried about a million times, especially when I got to the part of the book about her past. I haven't even finished it yet and I feel like I already have a book hangover.

Not that she'd had one recently. As she toweled off, she considered her dream. She read enough steamy romance novels to have the occasional naughty dream. Usually, as she read, she conjured up some nebulous romance hero in her imagination. Suddenly now, her highlander looked and sounded precisely like Angus McGregor. And she'd have to face him at breakfast. She rolled her eyes at the notion. Pull yourself together, she chided herself while she dried her hair. It's not like Angus knows about the dream. And anyway, he's merely a guest. Treat him like you would any other guest.

“Unless our boy here decides to grow a spine and remember why he’s on our side.” I stiffened. “Meaning?” “Meaning you’re too busy mooning over Dominic’s son to care about the mission.” His grin widened and became more cruel. “What, Xane? Are you falling for your little Storm pet? Is that why you’ve been so quiet?” Heat rushed up my neck. I took a step forward, my fists clenching before I could stop them. “Say that again.” Reid laughed. “Oh, he’s mad. Did I hit a nerve?”
