The impact shook the earth, knocking Ben and Haley off their feet. Dust and ash billowed up. Through the haze, a head rose. It was a snake. But calling it a snake was like calling a tank a bicycle. It was a Titan Anaconda. It was easily thirty meters long, its body as thick as a subway car. Its scales were not skin; they were armored plates of calcified bone, dark green and jagged. Its eyes were milky white, blind but sensing heat. And it had... legs. Vestigial, clawed limbs near its head, remnants of some ancient or mutated DNA.

Eldion shouted. The giant lizard stood on its hind legs and moved in a humanlike manner. It peered through slit eyes on an egg-shaped head that tapered towards the chin. “There were a few eggs that hatched. Which incubator was yours in?” Taerin stood up and headed towards the room. “It was in incubator twelve. Did you ss-see an egg from there?” Solomon walked with him. They reached the incubator with the white-haired child. Taerin gasped and smiled. “He looksss jusst like a Ghosst ssnake. Hiru.” He pressed his face against the glass. Solomon committed the name to memory. “He is a reptile shifter.” Taerin turned to him, then back. “Whether a reptile shifter or of the other three kinsmanship. He’s my son and I’ll love him, regardless.”
