‘Georgie, stabilise his neck while I check his airway. Georgie placed a hand onto each side of the surfer’s head to prevent further neck movements while Ben applied a jaw thrust to open the airway. The lifesavers had opened their resuscitation kit, which included a mask and bag and a small oXygen supply. Ben fitted the mask and turned on the oXygen. Fortunately the patient was breathing spontaneously, and his colour looked good. ‘Is there a hard collar in that kit?’ Georgie asked. One of the lifeguards passed her a universal hard collar, which Georgie adjusted to fit the patient and applied to his neck.

They began working fast. "What is happening to him?!" Kieran shouted. Anger and fear filled his voice. "What the hell happened?! He was just awake a moment ago!" "His vitals are dropping fast" a nurse said. They worked quickly. Resuscitating him. I stood frozen as I watched them. They did all they could. Defibrillators. Chest compressions. Medications. Everything they could do. They tried it all. Kieran paced like a madman. He ran his hands through his hair. "He can't die! He can't!"
