Reverie Shain Rose Novels & Stories

Her peaceful bubble of life, pinned down and leaking with every new minute she spent in her old house. All of it stemmed from that single face that hovered at the edges of her nerves like a plague. Her hand that moves to adjust her pillow touches a sleek texture and the young girl pauses. The resin rose is staring up at her like it always did when she lays her gaze on it. Faintly, she remembers clutching at it before she went to sleep, but it only adds more irritation to Alina's already crumbling mood. "Is there a way to change this? I can't go back looking like a celestial being. Kendrick will know the moment he sees me."

I pressed my bare shoulder against the cold marble pillar and prayed the thick shadows would hide the ruined state of my red dress. The heavy scent of melted beeswax and dark lavender incense usually brought peace to the royal court but tonight it just made me sick to my stomach. I held my breath while the muffled roar of the freezing rain battered the high stained glass windows above us and masked the sound of my ragged breathing. High Priest Kaspar paced back and forth in front of the sacred silver altar with his pristine white robes sweeping across the polished floorboards.
