And whatever that smell was, it made a word ring in my ear. She repeats it in, over and over again. Like a broken record, she keeps repeating the word. Mate. Mate. MATE. It rings inside my ear, and my heart starts hammering inside of my chest. The information making mental images appear on my brain. Memories of the past few days play in reverse in my thoughts and I slap myself mentally for not noticing sooner.
