The tip of his tongue appeared from between his plump lips. He found the page he’d been looking for and quickly skimmed it. With a satisfied hum, he chucked the book behind his shoulder where it was swallowed up by that strange, shimmering magic.

The room purred. The next room was clearly for literature. Bookshelves lined the walls—well, what was left of them. Some had collapsed completely. Most of the books were moldy or dust. I summoned a scroll of pure raw magic, unfurled it across the nearest shelf, and pressed my palm flat. Golden light streamed from my skin and sank into the wood. Preservation, restoration, clarity. I didn’t rush it. Books reformed—spines repairing, pages un-crumbling. Audrey stepped up and murmured titles aloud, letting her memory call them into existence. They shimmered into being, each one glowing before falling gently into place on the nearest shelf.

“Go on, baby.” Ava looked nervous, but she placed her hand against the print. Immediately, the book shuddered like a living thing, and the leather rippled like the surface of a pond. With a low, groaning sound, the book unlocked itself, the pages fluttering open to somewhere near the middle. Strange letters danced across the pages, shifting and rearranging themselves until they settled into readable English. “It's enchanted to adapt,” Bonnie said, smiling faintly. “Otherwise, only the elders could have read it.”

But I forced it down. I didn’t come this far to retreat.Swallowing my disgust, I stepped forward. Each step felt heavier than the last, as though the ground itself resisted my presence. I thought for a moment and eventually flipped the first page of the book open. I flipped to the next page and found words scattered across the book. They didn't make any sense despite being written in English; I couldn't find any meaningful insight from the wording. Almost giving up on the book, my eyes caught a piece of paper on the next page, and I flipped it open to find a sentence written on it.
