I pull one out, glance at the first few pages, and then slip it back into its place before continuing. “Hmmm,” I hummed as I squatted to see the books at the bottom. Leaning against the modern black four-poster bed, she looked around her with a heavy sigh. “There’s nothing here…” “I told you, Calleigh.” Desolately, she went to the bookshelf. It held only faded fashion magazines, years out of date, and a few slender volumes on etiquette and charm. She picked up the book on top, a splashy pop-culture book, and read the title out loud in dismay.

“We improvise it live.” Pauly handed her a slim, battered paperback—Mockingbird, cover worn, pages gutted to hold a wafer-thin transceiver and a micro-SD slot. “Your new copy. Same weight as the real one. Press the title twice if you’re burned; it wipes your last three hours and plays an audiobook. Press the author twice and it pings us with location.” She slid the book into her tote without looking. “And if I press the spine?” “It complains about being objectified,” Pauly said.

A big part of me was scared too. Exasperatedly, she waved her hand and the same book that Jace gifted me appeared in front of us. She waved her fingers in the air. When I was done with the reading, my big eyes turned to her. She wasn't kidding. It was clearly written what she told me about the reborn thing.

I somehow found myself reading back this book to try and get myself back into the story to get the motivation to write more of the sequel and it was shocking how many times I cringed reading this book back! I do forget that I finished Shy when I was 16 years old. Six years on, I think it's finally time to rewrite and update this book so I can read it without cringing so horribly at 16 year old me. I hope by rewriting this it will get me back into the story and I can continue to write more updates for Defeated. In the meantime, enjoy the rewritten version of Shy called 'Shy (Rewritten)'! It will be updated bit by bit and will not be uploaded all at once! But I hope you like it!
