I hadn’t bothered asking why. Everything about him, his posture, his silence, the set of his jaw had made it clear that I didn’t have a choice. The temperature had dropped to just above freezing, and a thin mist had blurred the streetlights. We had driven along Harrow Road before turning into Scrubs Lane. Less than half a mile later, the road had risen and dipped over Mitre Bridge, stretching across the Grand Union Canal and the Paddington rail lines. Ruiz had pulled over, cutting the engine without ceremony.
