“Bree, what was that?” Brianna was occupied flipping through the first book, so she didn’t answer at first. He saw her shocked expression and got by her side to check the name of the book she was reading. ‘The peacemaker fallacy: waging war as a business strategy’ Nate frowned, trying to make sense out the title. “Bree, what is it?” “Love… it’s about the Council. All of them, look.” She got a few pieces of paper that didn’t belong to any book and showed him what she saw.

It didn't help that he had a shy demeanor, he knew he'd outgrow it. It was raining hard by the time the trio got back home. Everything was drab and wet, the rain had surprised them on their way to the park and had decided to stay, ruining the rest of the day for them.

The words slipped out before I could stop myself, and the awkward silence that followed was thick enough to cut through. I scratched the back of my neck, trying to play it off. "The book... it would be a nice way to know more." Frank finally relented, letting out a deep sigh as he handed me one of the thicker volumes, its leather cover cracked with age. "Here. I got another book that was better than the first. Way better." He hesitated, eyes softening just a bit. "Be careful, Elliot. I'm sorry about what happened in the woods, though."

Time for "old faithful." I pulled out some scriptures Ruthie, my best friend, gave me. I had a bookmark in Genesis Four. That's where I'd stopped the last time I needed help falling asleep. Yes, I was a scripture-reading teenager. However, my motivation wasn't to get all spiritual - it was to get so bored, I would fall asleep. It was a tip from Ruthie - whose parents were super righteous. Ruthie called the scriptures her insomnia cure - a biblical miracle! Ha! Fortunately, it worked for me, too. I cracked the book open to Genesis Four.

Cold. I pressed my hand over my mouth to muffle a cough from the thick air. Carefully stepping back, my heel hit something. A shelf. A loud thud hit the floor behind me. “Damn it…” I muttered under my breath, fumbling to pull out my phone. I turned on the flashlight and aimed it toward the object. It was a book. Old. Worn. A diary. I bent down and picked it up. The name on the first page stopped my breath cold.

River's fingers danced across the spines, devouring titles that whispered promises of resilience and courage. "The Blind Voyager", "The Lame Warrior's Triumph", "Against All Odds", and "Unlikely Heroes" each resonated deeply, but one title in particular caught her eye: "The Story of Alero, Blind Healer". With gentle reverence, River pulled out the slim volume, its cover adorned with intricate, raised patterns that evoked the delicate petals of a flower. The book did not come out alone, it came with another document: a large parchment like the one in her dream!

I clarified. "Wait—what are you trying to say?" I didn't know how to put it in a way that does not offend her, hence I just stayed quiet about it and just described to her what the specific contents of the book may entail. Thankfully, she obliged without a word. After relentless scouring and searching, we eventually stumbled upon one that met my criteria. It was a journal—a journal authored by a former warrior of the Great Rift. "Are you sure this is what you're looking for? Not a textbook?"

So stop fighting it and just cooperate. Summoning every last ounce of strength, I swung a wooden stick at them and bolted toward the mouth of the alley. Just as I was about to escape, someone grabbed me from behind and dragged me back. The three men closed in around me. Rip— My coat was torn open with brutal force. The freezing night air immediately hit my skin. Tears spilled uncontrollably down my face. My vision blurred. One of those filthy hands reached for my chest. And then— A low, commanding voice echoed from the entrance of the alley.
