With the help of Maeve and Alara’s journal, Evelyn performs the ritual under the blood moon. The river rises unnaturally. Mist wraps around her like fingers. The spirit—neither man nor beast—emerges, cloaked in water and shadow. It offers Evelyn a choice: become the river’s keeper and end the cycle, or refuse and let another die in her place.

I said accepting my drink from RJ and the fact that I couldn’t talk with Crispin at this moment. “Yes, we were, so I’ll start with Leo and move onto Lucy and then we need to talk about your appearance at court next week.” My dad says after putting his half-empty glass down. “Ok our War cats are a crossbreed from our animals from Crustalia planet that made the trip with Earth’s feline creatures. She looked like she was about to start crying again because we were taking too long to answer. “Kitten, what is this about?” I asked. “Earlier today I noticed that Raven had marked Cat. Cat explained that it was normal for mates to mark each other pretty much as soon as they find each other and can get some alone time.” She answers. “I’ve been here for a month now, and you two are marked, but….” She started to say.

And every head turned. Ember, the charcoal kitten, crawled out of Raven's robe. She stretched and yawned. Then she trotted across the stone floor, her tiny claws clicking, and curled up against my feet. Right against my bare ankles. She began to purr. Raven looked like she was praying for the ground to open up and swallow her whole. I looked down at the kitten and it looked up at me. Then I heard Cressida curse under her breath. "Shit."
