“Carlson, you back here?” We both turned back to the path. It was Jerry West, the Sheriff of Mahigan County. A big, broad-shouldered country boy from Swedish stock. Close-cropped, white-blond hair and deep blue eyes. West liked to act like John Wayne but was usually pretty easy to work with and didn’t worry about politics as much as other sheriffs I’d known. I’d seen him at the funeral, but hadn’t thought much of it. He looked at me, then at James.
