Her phone rang immediately, and the name she had feared for months echoed in her ears, his voice filled with emotion yet calm like a winter breeze. "Karen, stay put, I'm on my way to you." The call ended before she could process it. He was the reason she had fled, refusing to sign the divorce papers. Her love for him was unrequited, his heart belonging to her adopted sister, but what hurt more was the feeling of being traded between friends like a commodity. She would rather die than return.

A tear trickled down my face. “Do you actually love him?” He asked, anger rippling with each word.  I rubbed my temples. The stress of this damn mate bond would eat me alive. “Of course not. But circumstances…” “Circumstances being you are my fucking mate! Mine to claim. Mine to own. Mine to cherish. Mine to love. Mine to fucking obsess over. You, Gems, have always been my only addiction. An addiction I have no desire to kick. Ever.” I stared at him, hopeless. I had no defenses left to fight his magnetic attraction. I allowed his gravity to grab me, suck me under, pull me into his consuming orbit. Again. Fuck!

The clerk gave me that soft, pitying look. “Ma’am... do you still want to proceed?” I shook my head, and dialed home. The moment my Beta sister picked up. “Tell Alpha Dad I’m coming back to the Ridge. Today.” A pause. “You sure?” “Yeah,” I said, standing up, my voice steady. “I’m done here.” And just like that, I walked out. Not just from the building—but from him.
