blank. My hand doesn't burn. It vanishes. I watch, paralyzed, as my fingers dissolve into black dust. The Stone isn't accepting me. It’s unmaking me. I try to pull back, but I can't. The blackness spreads. It races up my wrist, past my elbow. My skin flakes away into ash, sucked instantly into the rock. I open my mouth to scream, but the air in my lungs is gone. I look down at my body. My legs are fading. My torso is unspooling like a dried petal caught in a gale.

the Seer ground out, her milky eyes tracking the shape beneath the towels. "I messed up," I sobbed, pulling the towels away to reveal the gray stone. "I used the fluid blast from the thin book, but it did this. Please tell me you can undo it." The Seer stepped closer, her gnarled fingers tracing the cold limestone cheek of Ravena. She closed her eyes, murmuring a low, rhythmic chant that made the dust in the hut dance. A pale light flickered from her palms, washing over the stone before snapping off like a dead wire.

I stepped closer, and she instinctively moved back, bumping into the bookshelf behind her. Her throat worked as she swallowed, but she didn’t look away. I smirked, leaning down just enough for my breath to fan across her cheek. “Stand still,” I muttered. “I’m going to take what you stole from me.” My hand shot up to her neck again, my instincts screaming to pull the stone back, to drain the energy the way I always had. But it didn’t work. It didn’t move. A sharp frustration burned up my spine. What the hell?

My roar echoed so loudly it cracked the silence around me. I scaled the outer wall without hesitation, gripping every crack in the stone until I reached the balcony of my bedroom. The flames had already taken over everything. The heat slammed against my skin like a violent wave. Sweat poured down my face. My feet touched the balcony and I pushed aside the debris from the door until I could enter. I saw a figure through the smoke. Malik. He was holding the ruby stone. The last fragment… the fragment that belonged to her. My voice came out like thunder.

Evelynn collapsed against him, shaking, her tears damp against his neck. He held her tightly, rocking her as though she were fragile crystal. “I’ve got you. I’ve always got you.” She drew in a trembling breath, forcing herself to meet his gaze. “That stone… it’s alive. And it knows me.” His eyes flicked to the jagged rock, his expression like steel. “Then we destroy it before it claims you.” The ground hummed beneath their feet, as if the stone had heard him. Evelynn flinched, the fire in her veins sparking hot, ready to betray her again.

He was hanging onto the edge of the broken bridge with one hand, holding me with the other. But the effort was too much. I watched in horror as the black obsidian stone on his arm began to spread at lightning speed. It raced up his shoulder and toward his neck. "Let me go!" I sobbed. "You're turning to stone! If you don't let go, you'll freeze like that and fall with me!" Alaric looked down at me. His eyes were turning into solid black glass. He couldn't speak, but one final thought flickered into my mind before the link died completely.

His voice fills my mind as he opens our mindlink. ‘I love you both.’ THE END This concludes book 1 of The Stone Sister Series! I know there are still many questions: What about Bram?
