“It sounds… like it should be yours, only yours. ‘Mon amour.’ My love.” I blushed, my heart pounding in my chest. “You know I don’t speak French.” He pressed a soft kiss to my forehead. “Then I will teach you… one kiss at a time.” I laughed, a trembling, delicate sound. He pulled me into his arms, holding me so close I could feel the strength of his desire, the depth of his longing that he had never released. His fingers drifted over my skin, tracing patterns I had never known I knew. Every caress was a poem. Every caress was a confession.

The lodge doors burst open, letting out a wave of warmth, laughter—and her. Sebastian froze. She walked out like she owned the snow beneath her boots. Long dark hair spilled from a wool hat, her coat cinched at the waist, confidence in every step. She was beautiful in a way that felt intentional. Dangerous. Her eyes scanned the area sharply, calculating exits. Sebastian’s hand twitched toward a gun that wasn’t there. Because he knew her. Nyra Valen. Mafia queen. Strategist. His biggest rival. And apparently… a Christmas tourist.

I nodded at him and instantly made for the library. On getting to the library, I barged in impatiently to see her sitting in my spot, holding my mother's book. The second volume. She raised her head to look at me, letting a smile tug at the corner of her lips. “You are quite fast with the book.” I said, walking towards her, letting her scent fill my nostrils. “It's interesting with a great portion of smut, and court drama.” Hyacinth whispered, grabbing a cup of wine on the table. “And mystery too, so… it's quite the package.”

But I didn't get a chance to call it out when she continued . “I stumbled upon this book the other day. By mistake, obviously. I thought it was a theological study on ‘Fellowship,’ but it was actually this incredibly sappy romance story about two childhood best friends who fall in love after they made a promise to marry each other if they were still single by thirty.” She let out what sounded like a nervous, high-pitched giggle. “They were very scandalous scenes in the book, Leon,” Rose murmured in a low voice. “Their…sexual escapades were so vividly described I couldn't stop blushing, but I couldn't stop reading either.” She laughed again.

“She’ll probably spend the whole holiday in here if you let her.” I walked the aisles slowly, trailing my fingers over the books. Classics. Thrillers. A whole section of contemporary romance—Mirabel’s doing, mostly. She’d started collecting them in high school, said they were “escapist but smart.” I’d never read them. Too many happy endings. Too much hope wrapped in pretty words. I pulled one down at random. Dark cover, brooding man in a suit, and title written in gold foil: Claimed by the Billionaire. I snorted softly, then slid it back.

Not close enough to invade his space, but enough that he had to tilt his head slightly to keep looking at me. This close, I noticed things I hadn’t before. The silver flecks hiding inside his gray eyes. The faint flush on his cheeks from the whiskey. The way his breathing wasn’t nearly as steady as he probably wanted me to believe. His cologne lingered between us. Clean, subtle, comforting. He smelled… inviting. “What are you doing?” he asked. I glanced down briefly. At his lips. They were slightly parted and they looked soft. I smirked. “What do you think I’m doing?”

Please be prepared. My heart raced as I opened my system inventory and found a pair of red heels inside. I selected 'claim', and in the next second, Ximena appeared right in front of me. "Hubby?" she called out, and I smiled at her. "Ximena… Welcome to my world."

Guilt makes my stomach twist and turn, but I still have every intention of finding out what was in that book, one way or another. You could just ask him, I think. But after our conversation on the beach this morning, when he got upset at me simply for researching him, I have a feeling that won't end well. If anything, I'm afraid it will decrease my chances of learning the truth - if Rafe has something to hide from me, I suspect the book would disappear before I had the chance to look in it again. I hear him enter the room behind me, feel the familiar, pleasurable rush of sensation down my back. How is it that no matter how many questions or doubts I have about him, my body still reacts this
