Most of them were what I expected—books on strategy, history, a few on Italian mafia politics. And then, tucked on the bottom shelf, almost hidden— "You weren't kidding about these?" You kill people for a living, but you read romance novels?"

Only after Anni mentioned a library while they were preparing for the date did Katherine conclude that it should be this room. After inspecting the shelves for a while, Katherine got an overview. It were mostly history books with nearly as many books about war and strategy, a few maps, and half a board of novels mixed in. Of course they weren't romance novels, but thriller. It didn't really matter, as thriller were her second dearest. Still, a few romance novels would've been nice. Picking a book about the history of the Icelands, Katherine sat down in an armchair and started reading. Knowing her enemy was just as important as knowing her own aims. Maybe even more than that.

In the center of the room stood an imposing mahogany desk with a leather chair. In front of it was a large black chaise longue resting on a round white rug. The atmosphere was luxurious yet discreet. Magnificent. I spent several minutes simply admiring the most beautiful room I had ever entered. Then I slowly walked along the shelves, stopping when I reached Historical Romance. Romance novels were what had brought me this far as a virgin. They were my Achilles’ heel, and there was nothing I could do about it. I picked up my cliché: Pride and Prejudice.

For the first time in what felt like forever, the knot in my chest loosened completely. I pulled down a thick historical romance with a brooding duke on the cover, it was exactly the kind Mirabel would tease me about, and sank into one of the leather armchairs. The cushions hugged me perfectly. I kicked off my slippers, tucked my legs beneath me, and opened the book to the first page. The words pulled me in immediately. Rich descriptions, sharp dialogue, the slow burn of forbidden attraction between the heroine and the man who was supposed to be off-limits. I lost track of time, turning pages steadily, the outside world fading until there was only the story unfolding in my hands.

I also don’t understand why I didn’t sense that it was Luther in the shadows. I read in a History of Wolves, a book written hundreds of years ago about our kind, that a wolf will always recognise its mate. They’ll be able to scent each other from half a mile away, even if they aren’t yet mated. So why didn’t I? Am I such a pathetic excuse for a wolf that I don’t even have the ability to sense or scent my mate? I’m unworthy of Luther, and this right here proves it.
